When the sun is shining everything is thriving and the world seems a mass of colour, but most of us would love the keep our plants alive throughout the year. With a climate like the UK, we can’t guarantee that but there are some shrubs that are quite happy throughout different seasons, not just summer. Here at Garden Creation Services, we know how to keep your garden flourishing all year round, so here are some ideas for autumnal flowers that will light up your life. Your garden is an extension of your personality and can really influence how you are portrayed by others, so it really is worth making the extra effort and letting your aura shine through via your garden design.
Flowers that bloom in Autumn
Here are five of our favourites that work well in a UK garden.
- 1 Sneezeweed ‘Sahin’s Early Flowerer’
This glorious flower will bring a pop of colour to even the dullest garden. Think of sculpted orange daisies with deep brown velvet centres. If you want repeat flowers then just deadhead the plants. You’ll need good soil of around 1 metre deep for these and then watch them rise.
- 2 Phlox ‘Monica Lynden-Bell’
Sounding like your aunt’s friendly neighbour, this pale pink phlox thrives even in the shade. Although it looks delicate, it has a robust constitution and will last even through the cooler days of the season. Keep them hydrated and happy in around 75 centimetres of soil.
- 3 Dahlia ‘David Howard’
Create a glowing border of gorgeous dahlias. The way these soft orange flowers unfold always makes us feel like they are exposing their secrets to the world. This flower likes the sun, so make sure it is well placed to grab the last of those rays before they fade out for the year.
- 4 Red-hot poker ‘Tawny King’
This long-flowering poker adds texture to your garden and looks like a really exotic plant although it blooms well here. It delivers in flushes, providing ever more beauty. The gentle yellowing colour works with a variety of other flowers to be a friendly accessory. Keep them in moist soil with as much sunlight as possible.
- 5 Aster ‘Little Carlow’
Everyone loves an aster, and these sprays of lavender-blue daisies bring a beautiful shade to your lawn. Although small, they create a great impact amongst other flowers. They bloom in late summer, so you can get them down now and enjoy them into autumn. Let them flower in the sun and keep the soil deep.
